Ratchet & Clank Q-Force is the new addition in the series from Insomniac games. This is however quite a different style game from what fans of the series are quite used too. The game is like a tower defence game were you must protect a designated base while also trying to capture other bases situated around each of the levels. There are a total of 5 levels in the game & the focus is based more on the multiplayer aspect of the series. This works really well as the game is fun to play with exploring each of the environments & obtaining the vast amount of destructive weapons to blow your enemies out of the sky.  Although this a fun game to play as it still manages to retain alot of the familiar style humour that fans of the series have become accustomed to over the years…

Dirt Showdown is the new racing game from Codemasters, creators of DIRT 3 etc, it carries on the tradition of the extreme style off-road racing that Codemasters has become popular for. Upon starting the game players are introduced to some amazingly detailed menu screens and you will be asked to enter an activation pass to be able to play online. Players will then be asked to sign up and log in to the codemasters new racenet service that is very similar to EA’s Autolog that is used for the Need for Speed games to help keep track of stat details, best lap, race times and race wins. Players can also connect to their you-tube account to upload videos of races, crashes etc.

Game Overview

Analogue A Hate Story is a 2012 nominee for the national Indie Cade (Independent) games festival held in Los Angeles California from the 4th to the 7th of October.  The game itself is an interactive science fiction graphic novel were the player is assigned the task of reading and acquiring various  levels of information from hacking terminals to reading emails etc to try and understand the events that have taken place onboard a large derelict space ship that has been missing for thousands of years.  Players will over the course of the game be given choices that will affect different outcomes as you progress through the story later on. You will gain a large insight to the background of the various characters that inhabited the ship and that the computer A.I plays a large role to the main outcome of the game.

Game Story Concept

The story of the game begins with a derelict ship that reappears within the space orbital system that has been missing for thousands of years and it has been surrounded by various mysteries and stories about what happened to it and its crew for generations. The player then takes on the roll of boarding the ship and the main mission is to try and retrieve any information regarding the last known whereabouts of the captain and the rest of the ships crew to try to determine how the ship actually disappeared. Once onboard the ship the player is given access to a computer terminal and once it is online they will be met by the first of two A.I (Artificial Intelligence) personalities that will help guide you through the game accessing various different files & emails etc to read to gain more knowledge and a better insight as to what actually happened on the ship. As you progress throughout the story you will eventually find out that the main A.I character that is helping you out is in fact one of the games main characters (The Pale Bride) that is mentioned a lot from reading most of the information that you come across which adds an unusual twist to the game. You find out that she was brought up to be wed by the emperor (ship’s captain) when she turns 18. The story then kind of skips ahead & reveals that the pale bride had been put in a cryogenic sleep & was woken up centuries later by the emperor’s family descendents & was held like a prisoner to be confined only to her own living quarters & wasn’t allowed to venture out to the rest of the ship.

Upon starting the game for the first time you (the player) will instantly gain access to a computer terminal that you must hack into. It can be quite difficult to understand what to do at first but there will be onscreen hints available to assist players with trying to access the main terminal. Once logged in, different computer A.I characters will be available to assist the player with organising and understanding the information that will be read to help the progression of the story. Players will mainly interact with the use of the mouse to navigate though the menus & options that will be available in the game, when using the computer terminal mode however, the keyboard is used to input commands, codes etc, that can be used to unlock new content to help with the progression of the story.  You must read through each of the messages that are made available and then gain feedback for each from the computer A.I under the show messages tab on screen so that it can access more files and give players more insight as to the events that unfold of the ships crew. You will find from playing the game for a while that the computer A.I has a huge role in the later outcomes and decisions that revolve around one the stories main characters known as the Pale Bride that you will later find out that it is her that is helping you all along… There is a lot of reading to be done throughout the entire course of the game. All the reading of information leads to the various outcomes of the story to help you progress, but this can get repetitive as this is the main aspect of the game.

A good concept for a game that actually has quite an immersive storyline the more you delve into it. There is some really nice character drawings and animation to give the game a real sci-fi atmosphere. The game is easy to get to grips with the main method of control and navigation mainly being with the mouse to click and scroll through the menus, options and information. This can however become quite repetitive after a while as this is mainly all you will find yourself doing throughout the course of the game. Also using the terminal aspect at various stages can be quite intimidating especially at the start of the game as there are very few hints available as to what to actually do which can leave some players becoming increasingly frustrated very quickly and leaving the game before they have actually had a chance to get to really play it.

If you like to read science fiction novels however then you will grow to like this game as some of the choices that can be made will affect outcomes and events later in the game which will keep you intrigued as to what will happen next. It is definitely worth trying out especially if you are new to interactive fiction novel game. It is kind of like reading a good book, once you get familiar with the story you will want to try and find out more.  There is a good educational aspect to the game also with regards to the reading of information to help determine the events of the story. It is quite a different approach to a game that is not often seen and it shows you the idea that not all games have to be all action orientated, run and gun, jump etc, they can be somewhat successful without these concepts and can cater for a different following of gamers…

Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the SEGA Mega Drive back in 1991 & it became an instant global hit. With the protagonist being a super fast spikey blue hedgehog that had the ability to be able to travel at lightning fast speeds, Sonic soon became the iconic mascot for the SEGA franchise. Super Mario, Nintendo’s main mascot hadn’t really had any competition up until this point, but this game completely changed the whole platform genre of gaming by creating something with such an intense sense of speed & platforming action that would leave players instantly hooked.

The story begins with sonic on a quest to save all of his captured friends & animals that have been captured & transformed into robots by the evil Dr Robotnik. You the player must guide sonic throughout each of the 6 zones in the game destroying the robotic enemies while also avoiding various hazards, spike traps, falling into bottomless pits etc that are situated throughout each level. You must also collect rings throughout your travels to help sonic gain extra lives & gain increased scores at the end of each level. The nostalgic sound of collecting rings will instantly remind players of all those fond memories from their childhood where you would literally play for hours on end until you were able to explore each & every area throughout all the levels. Collecting a certain amount of rings allows for sonic to gain access to the special stage zone at the end of each level, there are 6 in total where sonic must try & obtain all of the chaos emeralds.

There are 3 stages that are situated throughout each zone that sonic must travel through & players will face Dr Robotnik at the end of the 3rd stage of each. Robotnik must be defeated in order to progress. After progressing throughout each zone & defeating all the variations of Robotnik you must then face him one last time in the final zone. There is a real level of atmosphere & sense of achievement from defeating the final boss in this game & completing it. It gives you the player a great feeling of knowing that all of your hard work & persistence has paid off, it is a feeling that is not often seen in many games, even today.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a classic game that has now enjoyed over 20 years of global success & still impresses gaming audiences today with its stunning visuals & dizzyingly insane speeds. This game has gone down in history as one of the best games ever created & is still being enjoyed by gamers of all ages the world over. It is the pinnacle of the series that is yet to be bettered….

What was originally intended to be a PS Vita launch title, the highly anticipated quirky platform game Sound Shapes slipped from the intended release window so that the games developers Queasy Games could concentrate on creating a port version for the PS3. Now months after the Vita’s release Sound Shapes has finally made its way onto the PlayStation Network. There is also good news for anyone with a PlayStation Plus account wanting to buy the game, they will get up to 20% off the cost price and also get both the PS3 and Vita versions from the same purchase.

I have recently begun playing Virtua Fighter 5 on PS3. I was able to download the new updated version of the game from the PlayStation Network (PSN), i got it for free as i am a PS Plus subscriber… I briefly played the 1st Virtua Fighter game in the arcades years ago, but never played any of the other sequels until this. Haven’t played many fighting games for awhile now so it was i good idea to try something different, & first impressions are quite good, the graphics similar to a typical Sega style arcade game but work well.

The controls can be a bit confusing at first, (I’m usually a Mortal Kombat player) but once you get into it you can pull off some really good moves & combos that can inflict heavy amounts of damage to the opponent. There are plenty of characters to choose from each with their own individual move sets & costumes etc… enough to keep players happy for awhile. You can play through the usual practice & arcade modes, but new modes have also been added, score attack, were players thrive to gain the highest amount of points to display on the online leader-boards etc & licence mode were players are given certain tasks to try & complete as they fight through each round. The online mode isn’t too bad either with a good mix of novice & experienced players regularly playing, you will definitely know when you meet an experienced player as they will destroy you…

My only really argument with the game would be the achievements list, there is a good mix available but most of them are extremely easy to obtain, thought that there would be a bit more of challenge with them, the one i think that most people would have most problems with would be getting a 5 – hit combo in score attack & complete 10 licence challenges… It is a good fighting game & is worth a try for any fighting game fans out there, & anyone who has a PS Plus subscription definitely should give it a go, especially when you are currently getting it for free for the next few weeks anyway until the offer ends…

I am currently playing the latest Resident Evil game & i am enjoying it, although i personally don’t think it is as good as Resident Evil 4 but it does have a lot of positives in being able to play with friends online both co-op & versus modes plus there is a lot of new dlc content that has been made available to keep you playing for a long time, being able to now move & shoot freely at the same time adds an extra element to the game play that hasn’t been seen in any of the previous games in the series. All in all it is a good game & will be more than enough to fill the hunger for the awaited arrival of Resident Evil 6 later in the year….

Max Payne 3

This game is awesome, i have been a huge fan of the series since the very first game back in 2001. Players resume the role of Max Payne, the down & burnt out former NYPD cop whose life hadn’t changed much until certain circumstances led him to what he thought would be a new life in Sao Paulo Brazil… But everywhere he seems to go trouble always shortly follows. He ends up working as a personal bodyguard for a local billionaire businessman, but attempts from outside sources lead to his young wife being kidnapped & held to ransom. Max is then on a mission to try & rescue her while also trying to confront his own personal demons reminding him of his past life that he thought he’d left behind…

The game can be quite tough to get to grips with. The bullet time effects are back & look cooler than ever. Although like the previous games in the series you will get yourself into situations regularly were you just can’t go in all guns blazing, even when using bullet time as you will pay a heavy price, i’ve found myself a victim to this on a few occasions were i would have to replay a section after about 10 tries before i would eventually succeed just barely with very little health to proceed to the next section, You really have to be aware of the enemy movements & their positions to have any chance of taking advantage of the situation. But this is a good move as it really makes you think about how to use your surroundngs to your advantage without making yourself a target. But its hard not to like it as like the previous games the story that unfolds is amazing , you can really get into the feel for the game & understand the character of max as he expresses his own opinions on the various situations that he ends up in. The comic book sequences from the first two games (which i thought gave an excellent feel to the story of both games) have been replaced with more action orientated scenes that allow players to see the action as it unfolds, which is pretty awesome.

The new multiplayer modes add an extra level of play-ability that hadn’t been seen in the previous games in the series. There are plenty of game modes to keep players interested along with a ranking system to be able to level up & add different customization loadouts for weapons & attributes. The games can be quite hectic & you need to have your wits about you when playing or you will fail miserably.

All in all the game is awesome & will be interesting to see were the story of Max goes from here. It is in my opinion the best game so far to be released this year, a must for any fan of the Max Payne series…
